Season 19: Whole Cake Island ep. 783–891

Big Mom arrives in person in this book, and the chapter that introduces her gives the volume its title. Chapters 828 to 838 open with Charlotte Pudding explaining what the crew is walking into: eighty-five children, and an alliance system run on marriages. 'Emperor of the Sea, Charlotte Linlin' is chapter 829. Two other things in the same book outlast the arc they appear in. Jimbei turns up with a dessert and a request, and Sanji's childhood with his family is shown in a flashback. Season 19 covers chapters 825 to 910, so the anime has been through all of it. Viz lists two hundred and eight pages at $11.99, and the book sits inside Box Set 4, which Viz states as volumes 71 to 90.

The flashback is the volume's real business. Sanji already had a finished origin, built out of Zeff, a floating restaurant and a debt, and this book lays a second one underneath it: a military family, three brothers and a sister engineered into soldiers, and a boy who wanted to cook. Retrofitting a settled backstory is the riskiest move a long series has, and this is the clearest case of it working, because the new material explains a trait the old material only asserted. Around it the mechanics of the arc get set. Big Mom's food rampages are treated as weather rather than temper, Pudding supplies a map and an offer of help, and Brook and Pedro break off after the Road Poneglyph the previous volume made necessary. Jimbei's request is the thread from this book with the longest reach. Luffy is fighting Cracker when it ends.
