Season 19: Whole Cake Island ep. 783–891

The fight this book is named for is between two members of the same crew. Chapters 839 to 848 carry 'Luffy vs. Sanji' at chapter 844, and the register of the arc changes around it: what the crew came here to do stops being a rescue and becomes a refusal. Before that, the Vinsmoke flashback finishes and the Cracker fight this volume inherits is still running. Season 19 covers chapters 825 to 910, so the anime has been through it. Viz lists 192 pages at $11.99, which is at the short end of the series and the same length as the volume after it.

What changes here is the shape of a Luffy victory. He beats Cracker inside these chapters with a form built around eating, and the win is made irrelevant within pages: Sanji, held by a threat against Zeff, beats him in the road, and Luffy does not fight back. He then sets the terms for the rest of the arc, which are that he will stand where he is and not eat until Sanji comes back. A series whose climaxes are punches makes its central conflict a matter of waiting. Nami slaps Sanji, and the slap serves as the book's judgment so the narration does not have to. Underneath, the plumbing is laid. Lola's vivre card, picked up after Thriller Bark and unused for more than thirty volumes, turns out to control the Seducing Woods, Pudding whispers something to the imprisoned Luffy that the book declines to print, and Sanji proposes to her and means it. The wedding is now a trap with two sets of jaws.
