- Season 20: Wano Country ep. 892–1088
The middle of Wano is where readers stall, and this is the book that most often does it to them. Chapters 954 to 964 tidy up business left over from the last three volumes: the sword dispute Zoro picked up two volumes ago, Law getting loose, the standoff between the two Emperors camped in the country, and news out of the Reverie. Then the invasion is halted before it starts, and the story abandons the present day entirely, dropping back forty-one years to a failed sailor being thrown out of the Flower Capital. The flashback that begins here takes over the next volume and is finished by the end of it. This book is the hinge and not the payoff, which makes it one of the few in the series that is not the reason to buy the run.

Two things in the present-day half govern everything later. Kaido and Big Mom fight to a stalemate and form an alliance instead, which makes the raid a two-Emperor problem rather than one, and the World Government dissolves the Seven Warlords of the Sea after the Reverie, retiring an institution the series has used since its first quarter. Sengoku's account of the Rocks Pirates is the other piece: Whitebeard, Big Mom and Kaido were once on one crew, broken up by Garp and Gold Roger working together forty years ago. Orochi then bombs the bridges to Tokage Port and the invasion collapses before it begins, which is the cliff the flashback interrupts. The flashback is the volume's argument for existing: Oden banished, Oden made daimyo of Kuri, Oden hanging off Whitebeard's anchor chain for a three-day test and dropping it with minutes left to pull Amatsuki Toki away from slavers. Zoro also gives up Shusui and takes Enma, a blade he cannot yet control, and that is still a problem for him in Vol. 102.
