Season 20: Wano Country ep. 892–1088

Chapters 943 to 953 are a prison break, a food rage and a reveal that recolors the book before this one. Most of the length goes to the labor camp at Udon: Big Mom walks in looking for red bean soup, and the last missing member of the Akazaya Nine is still locked somewhere inside. This volume does not stand alone. It opens on the aftermath of an execution that happened in the previous book and closes with the invasion of Onigashima assembled but not launched, so a reader who starts here is lost and a reader who stops here has bought half a sequence. Viz lists it at 208 pages and $11.99, the price of every standard volume in the series.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

The reveal is why the last volume hurt. Ebisu Town laughs because its people ate defective Smile fruits and have no other expression left, so Otoko laughs while she watches her father die, and the arc's running gag turns out to have been a description of mutilation. That is the strongest single idea in Wano and it lands here. The rest is machinery, efficiently run: Zoro goes for Orochi and Kyoshiro blocks him, Killer is returned to the camp, revealed as Hitokiri Kamazo, whom Zoro beat in the previous book, Big Mom rampages through Udon over denied oshiruko, and Queen headbutts her hard enough to give back the memory she lost on the beach, which is a joke and a plot device at once. The camp falls, Kawamatsu is freed, and the prisoners become an army. Kaido and Big Mom then clash directly, and the volume ends with the invasion's ships, men and weapons all accounted for.
