Season 20: Wano Country ep. 892–1088

The raid on Onigashima starts here, and it does not finish anywhere in this stretch of the run. Chapters 975 to 984 put the fleet in the water, name the six captains Kaido keeps beneath his three lead performers, and land the Straw Hats and their allies on the island. Nothing in the book concludes. That is the usual complaint about Wano read weekly, and it is also why the arc improves collected: taken with the two volumes after it, the raid's opening movement has a shape it never had at a chapter a week. The Omnibus Edition appears to begin a fresh book at this volume, though Viz states contents for its first omnibus only, so the grouping is our count and not its claim.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

Denjiro is the volume's best piece of construction. The yakuza boss Kyoshiro, who appeared to cut down Komurasaki in Vol. 93, changes sides in public with 1,200 men, and the flashback's revelation that he is Oden's retainer turns two volumes of apparent betrayal into a plan. The running joke underneath it is that Denjiro twice credits Kin'emon with a deception Kin'emon never planned. Then Luffy loses his temper over wasted oshiruko and abandons the plan almost as soon as it starts, which is the arc conceding what kind of story it is. Yamato arrives in the last chapter, beats Ulti, and lays claim to Oden's example, which is where the volume's English title comes from. Kanjuro delivers Momonosuke to Onigashima to be crucified, so the raid opens with the heir already taken. Nothing here is a fight carried to a finish, and several of the fights it starts are still running at the end of Vol. 102.
