Season 20: Wano Country ep. 892–1088

The shogun stops being the problem in this book, and what replaces him is worse. Chapters 985 to 994 open with Kaido and Big Mom announcing what their alliance is for, which is a plan for the country that leaves its shogun holding nothing. Orochi objects. From there the raid settles into the pattern it keeps for the rest of the arc: Luffy climbing toward the roof, the Akazaya Nine taking a twenty-year grievance to Kaido in person, the Straw Hats each pinned to one of Kaido's officers, and a fight over the building itself. The last chapters introduce a hazard that changes the terms for every person on the island, on both sides.

Kaido beheads Orochi in front of his own retainers and renames the country New Onigashima, and that is the change of register: the arc has spent most of its length on a puppet shogun and then discards him to make room for the opponent it actually cares about. The Akazaya Nine finally reach Kaido, and the twenty years they waited buy them a brief showing before he overwhelms all nine, which is the arc being honest about the gap. The book's real weapon is Queen's ice oni plague, released on his own side as readily as on the enemy, with the only antidote thrown to Apoo, so the rest of the raid is fought by people who are dying of something. Drake's cover as a Navy officer inside the crew breaks here as well, and he asks Luffy for a place. Every thread this volume opens is still open when it ends.
