Chapter 1000 is in this book, not in the one numbered 100, which is the most useful thing a buyer can know before paying for either. 'Straw Hat Luffy' is the chapter's title and the volume's, and it arrives inside chapters 995 to 1004 as part of a continuous fight rather than as an event with room around it. It does not stand alone. It opens in the middle of four separate battles and closes with five of the new generation on a roof facing two Emperors of the Sea, so there is no entry into it and no exit from it. What it has instead is the sequence the arc was built to reach, which is why a reader hunting the landmark should be looking at this number.

Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.

Chapter 1000 is the roof: Kid, Killer, Law, Luffy and Zoro against Kaido and Big Mom, with nobody left standing between the two generations. The English volume takes its title from that chapter, so the landmark is the title of the book before the round one. Around that, Kaido lifts Onigashima out of the sea to drop it on the Flower Capital, which converts the raid into a countdown. The sharpest writing in the book is an arithmetic: Cipher Pol Zero, watching from the side, puts 27,000 on Kaido's side against 5,000 loyalists, and then Otama feeds millet dumplings to the Gifters and the count starts to move. Sanji is trapped by Black Maria, Franky is handed Sasaki and Jimbei one of the Tobi Roppo, and none of those settle here. Marco is caught holding off King and Queen at once, which is the constraint the two volumes after this one are built to remove.
