Rurouni Kenshin 1 begins with a murderer using the Battosai name and damaging Kaoru’s sword school. The printed contents list chapters 1–6 followed by an end-of-volume special. This paperback opens the original manga; it is separate from Restoration and The Hokkaido Arc. VIZBIG 1 and the smaller 3-in-1 book 1 both collect standard Volumes 1–3, so either collection repeats this opening when bought alongside the single. The spoiler analysis below stays within the licensed first chapter and makes no recommendation about where to continue after an anime episode.
Spoilers — why this volume matters. Tap to reveal.
Kaoru’s claim that a sword can give life is first defeated by the men who use her school’s name to frighten away its students. Kenshin does not rescue that principle by declaring the weapon innocent. He calls swordsmanship a way of killing, then chooses her belief over the truth he knows. His intervention depends on the skill the old profession gave him, directed through a reverse-blade sword. The limit on killing is therefore a constraint on force, not a refusal to use it: the attackers are struck and thrown aside. Nor does the rescue purchase unconditional absolution. Kenshin expects his revealed identity to make staying dangerous for Kaoru; she asks the wanderer to remain while refusing to reduce him to his war name. Our reading is that the chapter tests whether a protective practice can be built with compromised tools. VIZ’s preview supplies printed pages 5–55; the remaining chapters and special were not read for this analysis.
