The Apothecary Diaries manga Volume 12 opens with Maomao being drawn into an evening of ghost stories. Chapters 59–63 belong to the Square Enix manga, whose contents move from that gathering toward the summer retreat and hunt. The licensed opening is a quieter interval in court work, not evidence that the later outing has been read. Continue from the preceding manga book; the spoiler analysis below covers the gathering and the beginning of one tale only.

Maomao treats solitude as a practical preference, but Yinghua treats it as a problem for the household. New attendants have arrived, and shutting herself away in a shed affects the newcomers in a way Maomao did not intend. The invitation to ghost stories therefore begins as a small correction to how she lives among other people. At the gathering, entertainment quickly acquires another function: stories circulate rumors the women have heard but cannot openly investigate. One tale describes hunger, a forbidden forest and neighbors who withhold help through fear. Its explanation is unfinished at the preview boundary. That incompleteness matters: the scene shows how information travels under court restrictions before it establishes which account is true, and Maomao must first be present to hear it.
