The Apothecary Diaries manga Volume 13 resumes the search following the attack during the hunt. Chapters 64–68 continue the Square Enix manga adaptation, and the opening assumes the preceding book's outing and danger. The analysis below reads the licensed opening pages through an awkward conversation after the search. It separates Maomao's concrete deductions from suspicions she cannot settle, and does not use the later bathhouse or court-rumor chapter titles as evidence that those chapters were read.

Maomao can infer a gunman's missing dogs from the weapon's smell more readily than she can answer Jinshi at her door. The hunt investigation supplies physical clues, an arrested suspect and still-unresolved questions about who directed the attack. The later conversation offers fewer usable signs. Maomao knows Jinshi wants to say something, thinks she can imagine his expression without seeing it, then refuses to guess his feelings. Her own account connects that reluctance to learning as a child that crying would not interrupt the women caring for her while they worked. That explanation is more limited than calling her incapable of attachment. She apologizes and listens through the door while maintaining the familiar name and distance. The passage contrasts deduction from objects with the additional risk of acknowledging what another person may want.
