The Apothecary Diaries manga Volume 14 opens with Maomao examining a concern about Consort Gyokuyo's pregnancy. The contents list chapters 69–74 in the Square Enix manga, so this is neither novel Volume 14 nor a new introduction to the court. The licensed opening makes access to suitable care part of the problem. Its spoiler analysis stays with that consultation and the proposed physician; the delivery, subsequent investigation and later village chapters remain outside the reading.

Maomao asks permission before examining Gyokuyo and distinguishes a worrying possibility from a certain diagnosis. That restraint is crucial because the court wants confidence she cannot honestly give. When she proposes an experienced physician, Hongniang's objection is not indifference to the consort: the man was expelled from the inner court and branded a criminal. Protecting Gyokuyo therefore produces incompatible ideas of trust. Maomao stakes her judgment on his competence, while Hongniang stakes hers on his official history. Neither position makes the practical risk disappear. Gyokuyo finally asks to hear more, opening a route through explanation rather than allowing either certainty to finish the argument. The passage puts medical skill, permission and institutional reputation in the same room without resolving the birth itself.
