The Apothecary Diaries manga Volume 8 opens with memories of learning to see people through board games. Its inspected contents list chapters 37 to 42. The opening changes perspective and looks backward rather than immediately resuming Maomao's investigation. Read it within the existing Square Enix manga sequence. Nekokurage's manga is the edition examined here; a novel or another adaptation with this spine number does not identify the same book or establish its chapter coverage.

The opening narrator describes understanding people as game pieces, a system that also explains his confidence in directing other men. Fengxian disrupts that confidence by defeating him at go. He notices her face after she wins, and their later meetings keep returning to the board. The account is his retrospective explanation, not an independent verdict that every person really is a usable piece. Nor does recognition make their situation equal: her rising price and his lost position constrain how often they can meet. A wager promises either winner a wish, but the inspected sequence ends in intimacy, regret and the disappearance of talk about buying out her contract. This reading covers only printed pages 3 to 19 of the licensed Square Enix preview through Penguin Random House, not the later explanation of that aftermath.
