Saving somebody does not settle whether the authorities approve of the method. The Knights Moralis threaten punishment after Coco and her classmates rescue locals, and Qifrey has to intervene. That changes the register from learning what magic can accomplish to confronting the rules imposed on its use. Qifrey’s pursuit of the Brimmed Caps adds another reason to resist treating official approval as the complete explanation. The buying argument is this friction between a useful result and an authorized act. It gives the earlier apprenticeship a problem that skill alone cannot solve.
