The conflict with South Kai brings Yona's concern for Hak into the preparations for war. This paperback continues the preceding battlefield material, with the relationship between personal protection and military duty still central. Read it alongside that campaign rather than as a separate adventure for either character. The event that changes what Yona knows about Hak, and the decisions that follow it, are discussed in the spoiler note.

General Rahn engineers the flood that carries away Hak and the senju herbs. Yona intends to accompany the Dragon Warriors onto the battlefield while Kohka calls its tribes to war. The simultaneous loss of a person and a valuable resource makes the flood more than a dramatic interruption. It alters both what the group knows and what it has available. The volume's argument is in that mismatch between private uncertainty and public mobilization. An army can assemble according to its needs even while Yona has no answer about the person she wants found.
