Yu Yu Hakusho Volume 5 opens with a brief comic pause as Kuwabara demonstrates his training before the next castle opponent. The pause is local: the licensed excerpt soon returns to combat, so this is not a promise of a quiet volume. The standard paperback continues the party's existing expedition and needs the preceding setup. Its contents list the numbered chapters separately from their page positions. The analysis below covers only VIZ's opening pages 7–21 and stops before Kuwabara's new tactic takes effect.

Kuwabara's sword demonstration gives him evidence that the others' teasing overlooks. He has developed the ability through trial and error, and can extend it without the earlier implement. The demonstration also makes Kurama dizzy, an immediate sign that a useful power has a cost. Facing Byakko, Kuwabara treats fighting alone as proof that his confidence was deserved. But the opponent creates several beasts, turning a duel into a problem his sword has not yet solved. Yusuke offers a concrete alternative: his own attack is better suited to multiple targets. Kuwabara refuses to switch while insisting that Byakko should face him directly. The opening separates having improved from having found the right method. His retreat toward the others begins another idea, but the excerpt stops before showing its result.
