Mechamaru: The Cost of a Private Bargain

Kokichi Muta’s bargain separates a legitimate wish for bodily freedom from the dangers of the means used to pursue it.

Spoilers throughout. This page discusses story events and outcomes.

Kokichi Muta’s bargain is understandable through the bodily freedom he wants and troubling through the alliance he enters to obtain it. Sympathy for the desire does not settle the consequences of the transaction.

An advantage does not cancel its cost

The official anime profile identifies Kokichi as the person remotely operating Mechamaru. His Heavenly Restriction exchanges bodily capacity for exceptional range and cursed-energy output.

That arrangement should not be read as proof that the exchange feels fair to him. An observer might value the unusual power while ignoring the ordinary activities its bearer wants. Comparing capabilities from outside cannot decide whether someone should be content with the conditions under which those capabilities exist.

The bargain does not secure the future

The official Japanese synopsis for episode 31 explains that Kokichi has cooperated with the curses in pursuit of a body he can move. Negotiations break down, and he fights Mahito in the large Mechamaru he has secretly prepared, hoping to escape and tell Gojo the curses’ plan.

The preparation matters because it separates wanting the promised outcome from trusting the other party without reservation. He has planned for danger. Yet preparation is not equivalent to control: the desired change to his body does not make the resulting relationship safe.

My reading keeps the wish and the method distinct. Wanting relief needs no moral condemnation. Making a private arrangement with a dangerous party introduces obligations and risks that the legitimacy of that wish cannot resolve by itself.

Information can still be used to help

In the episode 34 synopsis, a small Mechamaru informs Yuji that Gojo has been sealed. His explanation helps the group understand the crisis and begin acting to recover Gojo.

This later assistance belongs in the account without becoming a way to erase the earlier bargain. Responsibility can include both what made a danger possible and what someone subsequently contributes against it. A single verdict about loyalty can obscure the sequence of choices.

The Jujutsu Kaisen watch-order guide gives the broader viewing sequence. Within that sequence, Kokichi’s case asks a more specific question than whether he deserves sympathy: how can the reasons for a compromised decision remain visible while its consequences are still judged?
