Watch season 1, then the film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, then season 2. The film is a prequel, set a year before the series, and that fact leads a lot of people to watch it first. Doing so is a mistake, and it is worth explaining why rather than just asserting it.

Why release order beats chronological order here

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 adapts material that was published before the main series, and it takes place before it. On paper that makes it the natural starting point.

In practice the film is built on the assumption that you already know these characters. Its emotional weight depends on recognising who Gojo is, on understanding what a curse costs, and above all on its final scene, which lands as a reveal only if you have already met the person it concerns. Watched first, that scene is a piece of exposition about a stranger. Watched after season 1, it reframes an entire relationship.

This is the general rule with prequels made after the fact: the writer knows the audience has seen the later material, and writes accordingly. Chronological order is a property of the story, but the film was engineered for release order.

Where the film actually goes

Between the seasons rather than before or after both. Season 2 opens with a long flashback to Gojo's student years and then moves into the Shibuya arc, and several threads in that arc pay off setup the film established. Watching it in the gap means those payoffs land as payoffs.

You can also watch it after season 2 without much loss. What you should not do is watch it first.

The recap you can skip

There is a compilation edit of season 1 that recaps the series before season 2 began. If you are watching straight through, it is redundant. If you are returning after a gap, it does the job. Nothing in it is new.

The season 2 problem worth knowing about

Season 2's second half was produced under conditions that became a public story in their own right, with the staff describing a schedule that damaged people. It is visible on screen in places, and it is also, in stretches, the most ambitious animation the series has produced.

Mentioning it is not a content warning. It is context for why the season looks inconsistent, and the inconsistency is not a sign that you are watching a lesser arc.

Manga readers, a note on where the anime is

The manga finished its run in 2024. The anime has adapted a substantial portion but not all of it, which means switching to the manga at the end of the current anime material is possible and increasingly common. The chapter to start from moves as the anime progresses, so check rather than trusting a guide, this one included.
