Mello: When Cooperation Feels Like Losing
Mello’s refusal to work with Near exposes a rivalry in which a shared achievement cannot provide the recognition he wants.

Mello’s rivalry becomes restrictive when a shared result cannot count as an acceptable result. The desire to distinguish himself narrows what he can recognize as success.
NTV’s episode 27 synopsis has Roger propose cooperation between the successors; Mello rejects it and leaves. This essay reads that refusal, rather than diagnosing every later choice.
Two different contests
There is a difference between solving a problem and proving who is best at solving it. The two aims can reinforce each other when competition encourages effort. They can also come apart. A proposal that improves the chance of a solution can become intolerable if it makes individual precedence impossible to establish.
The refusal makes that conflict legible. Cooperation would leave the participants with an achievement whose credit has to be divided. For someone reading the situation as a ranking, division is not a minor administrative detail. It threatens to leave the central personal question unanswered even if the shared practical task is completed.
The appeal of a separate route
Independence promises an unambiguous result. A separate attempt can appear to offer clean authorship: success will belong to the person who produces it. That appeal helps explain the refusal without establishing that refusal as the soundest choice.
The objection is substantial. Cooperation is not automatically fair, and joining a stronger-positioned rival can threaten to make someone’s contribution less visible. A refusal can defend distinct judgment against being absorbed into another person’s reputation. The mistake would be to treat every unwillingness to cooperate as childishness.
Recognition can become a constraint
Even so, protecting a separate identity has a cost when it becomes a condition placed on every acceptable outcome. A person can gain room to act while losing room to accept help. Independence then stops being one possible method and becomes a rule that the result must satisfy.
Mello’s departure is most interesting at that point of tension. It expresses agency, but agency can be directed by the need to be measured against one particular other person. The critical question is not whether he wants recognition. It is whether a useful achievement would still feel worthwhile if it could not settle his relative standing. The refused offer leaves that question exposed.
