Misa Amane: The Price of Devotion
Misa offers a bargain, but being able to make an offer does not mean she controls what affection will cost.

Misa Amane has agency in her pursuit of Light. The problem is that she offers him the power to set the price of being loved.
NTV’s episode 13 synopsis describes her offering her notebook in exchange for becoming his girlfriend; Light offers only a pretense. This reading concerns that bargain.
A proposal is still a choice
Calling her merely passive misses the shape of the exchange. She names something she wants and offers something she believes will obtain it. Her desire is part of the causal structure, rather than decoration around another person’s ambition. She cannot be understood by erasing that desire and leaving only the fact that someone can exploit it.
But an active proposal does not establish an equal relationship. One party wants attachment; the other can decide what performance will count as attachment. Those are different kinds of power. Possessing something valuable does not settle the imbalance when the thing being sought cannot be inspected like an object changing hands.
What the bargain cannot guarantee
A promise of romance has a special weakness as payment: compliance can be imitated. The recipient can receive the outward form of what was requested while its emotional substance remains absent. The distinction is not a technicality. It is the difference between entering a relationship and being rewarded with a role in somebody else’s plan.
Misa’s offer therefore deserves scrutiny without contempt. Wanting affection is intelligible. Making usefulness the route to affection creates a structure in which usefulness can keep being demanded. Even a voluntary opening offer can establish terms that make later refusal feel like abandoning the very goal that justified the offer.
Agency without an excuse
The strongest reading holds two judgments together. Misa’s choice matters, so she should not be reduced to a person to whom everything simply happens. The unequal bargain matters too, so her initiative cannot be used to certify the arrangement as fair. Exploitation need not begin with an entirely unwilling person. Here the disturbing question is how readily a desired relationship can be replaced by a transaction whose emotional payment cannot be verified.
