Soichiro Yagami’s integrity is strongest when he admits that fatherhood affects his judgment. Admitting that conflict does not make his chosen response a good investigative safeguard.

In NTV’s episode 16 synopsis, he requests confinement because investigating his detained son would involve personal feelings. That is the narrow scene at issue here.

What the admission gets right

The request refuses a convenient fiction: holding an official role does not empty a person of attachments. A father can want the truth and also want a particular answer. Those desires do not cease to compete because he is honest about both. Soichiro earns credit for noticing the problem before treating his own confidence as proof.

His sincerity matters because a conflict of interest is not necessarily an accusation of corruption. Someone can be committed to an investigation and still be poorly placed to direct part of it. This reading gives his admission weight without making suspicion itself shameful. The people examining a suspect need grounds that survive the suspect’s family’s objections.

Why punishment is a poor substitute

Confinement has a different logic from stepping aside. It makes the conflict painful for the person who acknowledges it. But pain does not improve the quality of the evidence. A costly gesture can demonstrate conviction while leaving the underlying question exactly where it was.

That is the objection to treating the request as uncomplicated nobility. The choice turns a professional difficulty into a personal ordeal, inviting sincerity to carry weight that belongs to procedure. It is possible to admire the willingness to suffer and still reject suffering as the appropriate test.

A narrower claim for his integrity

Soichiro’s value in this scene is his refusal to pretend he is untouched by the accusation. The limitation is that he answers divided loyalty with self-denial. Neither his love nor his willingness to endure hardship determines what happened. The useful distinction is between acknowledging a bias and designing a way to keep that bias from deciding the case. He achieves the first; the request alone cannot establish the second.
