Most readers file this under the usual shonen refusal to lose, and the series proves it wrong on purpose. Black Star loses to Mifune the first time, cleanly, and loses to Kid on the academy steps before that, and both times he walks off insisting otherwise. The line is not a philosophy the show endorses; it is the exact flaw Mifune diagnoses when he asks whether Black Star is walking the path of the warrior or the path of the demon. A boy who cannot admit defeat cannot learn from it, and Tsubaki's job for most of the series is to carry him through the parts he refuses to see. The line is honest about him. It is not honest about winning.

He is the last of the Star Clan, a family of assassins the DWMA wiped out when he was an infant, and he was raised inside the school that did it by Sid, the teacher who later comes back as a zombie. The boast reads as noise until that history lands: the clan was destroyed for hunting souls the way kishin do, and the mark on his shoulder tells every enemy who he is. Surpassing the gods is the only ambition that does not put him back on his family's path, since the alternative, getting strong by taking souls, is precisely what got the clan killed. The line is a delinquent's slogan chosen because it is the one goal his blood does not already own.
