Byakuya has to poison what he says already belongs to Naraku. Kohaku loses consciousness, but the explanation continues: the shard must be sufficiently contaminated before delivery. The practical requirement contradicts the suggestion that resistance is pointless. Elsewhere in the episode, Naraku explains that the shard's pure light could purify him if he took it carelessly. There is something in the supposedly owned child that the owner cannot safely accept as it is. Byakuya's assurance tries to make domination sound like a settled identity while his snakes perform the work necessary to impose it. Sesshomaru's attack interrupts the seizure, and Byakuya withdraws without Kohaku. The claim never gets to substitute for the unfinished action. Calling someone property is part of the coercion here, not evidence that the person has already become incapable of resisting it.
