The broadcast is what everyone remembers, and this is what the broadcast cost. Stripped of the showmanship, the sentence is testimony delivered in four clauses that each close a door: made deliberately, found wanting, discarded, watching. Nothing in it asks for sympathy, which is what makes it harder to hear than any of his threats. Endeavor's whole late-story reckoning exists because these words went out on national television instead of staying inside one broken house. The speaker commits, in the same breath, to a fire that is killing him, and the calm is the point. A grudge wants satisfaction. This is a schedule.
