Two sentences that mean different things, and he says both because he knows the difference. Could not is a statement about capability and would be an excuse. Did not is a statement about what happened and is an accusation. He supplies the second immediately after the first, refusing himself the softer version, which is the most self-aware moment the character gets. It also explains the manliness vocabulary that follows him around. That framework is not swagger; it is a rule he built after a specific failure, to make sure the same gap between could and did never opens again. Codes usually arrive in this genre as inheritance. Choosing a role model is usually characterisation shorthand, and here it is closer to a confession. Kirishima picks a hero famous for a chivalric code and for never retreating, and he picks him specifically because retreating is the thing he did once and cannot stop thinking about. The quirk fits the anxiety with unusual neatness — a boy whose power is becoming hard, who privately suspects he is soft. What keeps this from being tidy is that the series never lets him grow out of the fear. He hardens, he holds the line, he saves people, and he is still visibly frightened while doing it, which the show treats as the point rather than a stage to be passed through.
