Euphemia li Britannia Quotes

2 quotes from Code Geass, each with commentary on what it means and why it stuck.

“Do you hear me, Zero? I don't care about your past nor who you are underneath that mask. I beg you, join us in creating the special zone of freedom.”

The broadcast cuts into a school festival where the student council is trying to bake the world's largest pizza, and Lelouch hears it standing in the crowd in his own uniform, thinking that he has already run this scenario and it is an empty dream. He is wrong, and that is what the line costs him. He later admits that if the Special Zone had gone ahead the Black Knights would have collapsed, because nobody fights an empire that has just conceded the point. Euphemia beat Zero by handing him his stated goal with no strings, and it is the only time in either season anyone beats him that way. The price of that victory is paid an episode later, in a stadium, by a Geass that fires at the worst possible moment. But the plan itself worked. Everything Lelouch does after is a response to how well it worked.

“I order you to love me!”

It gets quoted as the romantic peak of the show, and on its own it is a sitcom beat. A princess ordering her knight to love her, then listing his sad eyes and his trouble with cats, is the sort of scene an empire built on rank produces when it wants to be charming about rank. All of its actual weight is borrowed from two episodes later, when she is issuing an order of a very different kind and cannot stop issuing it. As a setup that is efficient writing: the word order, the giddy consent, the knight who says yes, all of it gets inverted. But an inversion is credit the later scene earns. Taken as the line people put on the card, this one is doing the thing the series is supposed to be against, commanding a heart, and being adorable about it does not change the grammar.
