Cornelia li Britannia Quotes

2 quotes from Code Geass, each with commentary on what it means and why it stuck.

The control experiment: a Britannian commander who is actually good at the job, so that Zero's run of victories has to mean something. Treats conquest and etiquette as one instinct.

“Welcome, Zero! I figured you would show up here as soon as you heard about the air raid. Now…join us for your welcome soirée. Care for a dance?”

The series needs at least one Britannian commander who is good at the job, or Zero's run of victories stops meaning anything. Cornelia is that control: she reads the trap, sets one of her own, and greets it in the vocabulary of a court function. The ballroom manner is not decoration. It is the Empire's whole proposition, that conquest and etiquette are the same instinct, spoken by its most competent soldier.

“You killed them all for the sake of that madness?! Clovis?! Even Euphie?!”

Two names, in ascending order of what they cost her, and the second one is the bill for an accident. The series had spent an entire season making the audience like the sister being asked about, then let a slip of a command turn her into an atrocity, and this is the moment it hands the arithmetic to the person who has to live inside it. Nothing in the reply Lelouch gives is adequate, which is the point.
