Archer guarantees Tucker protection and a return to military research, then changes his orders to forbid taking prisoners. A soldier raises the presence of civilians. Archer's answer is permission to proceed, not a distinction that would protect them. His private explanation supplies the connection: with Tucker available, the creatures can be replaced. Production has become an argument for disposal. The ability to create another chimera does nothing to preserve the particular person being killed, but Archer treats it as removing an obstacle to the operation. His protection is consequently selective in a revealing way. The researcher receives safety because his work remains useful; the existing subjects lose it because that same work promises replacements. Even suspicion is enough to put someone within the killing order. The scene shows how institutional usefulness can determine whose life is secured and whose death becomes an acceptable part of cleaning a place out.

“I'm afraid the battle has already begun.”

Archer makes the battle sound like a fact Ed has arrived too late to affect. Ed has reported that Lior's people have given up and reminds him of orders not to invade. Archer answers with an event already underway, shifting the discussion from whether the operation is authorized to whether anyone can now stop it. The soldier's report tests that posture. When told that Scar has been located and combat is beginning, Archer approves. The response does not show a commander merely trapped by developments he deplores. He welcomes the development that sustains the advance. Ed explicitly accuses him of pretending the situation is beyond his control, and the approval gives that accusation something concrete to rest on. The wording of the excuse remains useful even where control is imperfect: describing an action as already begun can discourage challenges to the decisions still helping it continue.
