“This brat's spirit energy has a very unusual wavelength. It responds to desperation by getting stronger.”

Genkai makes YuYu Hakusho’s inheritance problem harder than finding the strongest fighter. In the fourth manga volume’s opening, she tests applicants in a darkened arena and permits weapons and techniques. When an assassin asks whether his profession would disqualify him from her teaching, she says she will teach the ultimate winner regardless of profession or ambition. Yusuke worries that Rando could benefit from that rule. Her consistency makes the test severe and its ethics uncertain: skill does not establish what its owner should be allowed to do. These opening matches show an exacting selector, without claiming that she has identified Rando or revealing whom she eventually chooses.

“I put my whole body through hell to make it strong enough for my Spirit Wave Orb. And you're crying about some nasal accessory?”
This sentence never reached the Toonami broadcast of episode 50. Anime News Network's Edit List records it as cut outright, while her next jab at Suzuka survived with "hell" softened to "heck" and "half-assed" to "half-wit". A mild swear cost the whole thought, and the thought is the most informative thing she says in the fight. The Spirit Wave Orb is her inheritance: VIZ's copy for the manga's ninth volume, where she sets Yusuke the test of taking it on, calls it a concentrated ball of aura that he must be ready to inherit or he dies. Her body paid for that technique first. In the surviving line she also admits she has little Spirit Energy left, and she says all of it to an opponent the Edit List itself calls "so called Beautiful". Broadcast viewers saw an old woman beat a vain man. The uncut version had her name what the win was costing her, two episodes before the one Wikiquote titles The Death of Genkai. The edit kept the punches and cut the receipt.

The show is announcing its own rule, and it is a rule about character rather than about power. Yusuke's energy grows when he is losing; Genkai says it as a diagnosis, during a tournament she is running to choose a successor. It commits the series to a structure. Every big Yusuke fight from here to the end will have to put him near death before he can win, and the writers honor that. The mechanic is the excuse; the pattern it describes is a boy who only tries when it is nearly too late, which was true before he had any energy at all.
