Kuwabara introduces himself through a challenge to Yusuke, with his own claim to being the toughest student already under dispute. Losing the fight does not end his insistence on the rivalry. At Yusuke's wake, that same insistence becomes grief: he demands another fight from someone who cannot answer. The scene keeps the aggression and the attachment in the same gesture. It does not turn the earlier violence into harmless affection, or make Kuwabara reasonable because he cares. His loyalty first becomes visible through the language he already has, before he has found a better way to express it.

Taken as a creed about duty it is dull, and it is usually taken that way. The episode around it gives the sentence more to carry. Kuwabara's dormant powers have just awakened in his fight with Seaman, who realizes Kuwabara is the one who can shatter the barriers between dimensions. He frees his friends with his new sword, defeats Seaman, and then brings his attacker home along with them.
“But I'm not gonna fight back, so you just hit me as much as you're gonna and let me get out of here!”
The setup is small and precise. Mr Akashi has told Kuwabara that if he fights anyone for a week, Okubo loses the part-time job his family lives on, and then arranges for Kuwabara to be jumped. So the boy who introduced himself two episodes earlier promising to beat Yusuke's face in stands there and takes it. Yusuke, dead and watching, had told Botan the promise would not last long. The episode is the show's argument for Kuwabara in miniature: it gives him no power, no victory and no dignity, and asks whether he will keep his word anyway, and the answer is why he stays the moral center of the cast for a hundred episodes while everyone else gets stronger.
“No! You're supposed to be here...for me.”
Earlier in the episode Kuwabara was promising to beat Yusuke so badly that kittens would not look at him. Now he is being held back by his own friends at the wake, shouting at Yusuke's photograph. The show has not told us anything about their history yet; what it shows is a boy who has lost every fight to the same person and has organized his whole sense of himself around the next one. The grief is real and it is also a grievance, and the writing does not separate them. That is the honest version of a rival. Later series build the rivalry-into-friendship arc over years; Togashi does it in a minute, in the first episode, and then makes the audience wait to see Kuwabara earn the right to say it.

The first sentence is a pun the Japanese audience gets for free and the dub has to explain. Kuwabara is written with the characters for mulberry field, and kuwabara kuwabara is also the old charm people mutter to ward off lightning, so the name has always sounded faintly ridiculous to a Japanese ear in a way the English cannot carry. The dub's answer, a man insisting he is not a tree, is clumsy and oddly right, because the whole speech is about insisting on being taken seriously. It is also his death scene, or what Yusuke is meant to think is his death scene. The joke is there so the sacrifice does not sound like one.
