Gluttony asks for the killing to stop and then tries again to eat the people fighting him. Both parts of the exchange matter. His distress is intelligible even though regeneration has allowed him to survive earlier attacks; coming back does not mean he welcomes the experience. But recognizing that fear cannot require Lan Fan and Ling to let him continue attacking. The request offers no corresponding restraint. Lan Fan cuts him as he moves between pleading, anger and hunger, so the scene refuses a comfortable division between a frightened victim and a threatening monster. He is capable of suffering while remaining dangerous. His plea deserves to register as fear, without becoming an instruction that everyone else must stop defending themselves against the person expressing it.
