An account of a specific parenting method, delivered without self-pity, and it is the most damning thing the series says about its own society. Quirks here are cataloged at birth and children are sorted by them, which means a child whose ability points somewhere unacceptable is not treated as a child with a problem but as a problem. She was instructed to suppress it. The grammatical slip in the last clause, it grows rather than they grow, is worth noticing, because it marks the point where the feelings stopped being plural things she had and became a single thing that had her. Whether the series earns her as a tragedy is arguable. That the instruction she was given was worse than useless is not.
