Bradley answers the question about his wife by insisting that she understands and requires no further words. She is absent from the exchange, so his certainty about her needs has no answering voice. Lan Fan's unfinished question leaves room for the person who will survive him and learn what he was. There is a fair defense of his refusal: a dying person is not obliged to produce a sentimental message on demand, and silence does not prove that the marriage meant nothing. But he goes beyond refusing speech when he presents his wife's understanding as settled. The scene gives him authority over his last words, not independent authority over her eventual response. His final taunt treats Lan Fan's questions as time wasted at the expense of revenge. Asking what might be owed to someone outside the fight is a use of that time his account of victory cannot measure.
