Spike discovers the vandalized ship before Muriel tells him who did it. Her answer to his complaint is literally defensible: she has now passed on what she saw. The problem is the interval hidden inside that accuracy. He wanted information while there was still something happening to respond to; she treats the completed report as satisfying the same request. The exchange does not establish that she could have safely intervened, or even that a timely warning would have saved the ship. Its joke needs neither assumption. It turns on the difference between describing an event after discovery and notifying someone while the event is unfolding. Muriel answers the question of whether the words were delivered. Spike's anger concerns when they would have been useful, and the truth of her answer leaves that complaint untouched.
