His critique is correct and his conclusion is deranged, and the series is disciplined enough to let both stand. Heroism in this world is a licensed profession with salaries, rankings, agencies and merchandise, and a licensed profession selects for people who want the license. That is a real problem and nobody inside the system says it out loud. Where he goes wrong is not the diagnosis but the arithmetic: he decides purity can be assessed by one man, from outside, with a sword, which makes him the only person exempt from the standard he is enforcing. Note who he exempts. Not the most self-sacrificing hero, not the most effective — the most famous. A man who claims to despise the culture of hero worship has built his entire philosophy around a childhood idol and never noticed.
