“That's right! All I do is grow beans for you ingrates! I can't even get a pizza delivered up here!”
Krillin asks for more beans and learns that the last three have already been taken. Yajirobe's complaints about television and pizza make it easy to hear the whole exchange as laziness. The work he describes sits awkwardly inside that judgment. The fighters have received a scarce resource from the place whose discomfort they are mocking. His account of growing beans is a reminder that useful support can arrive from someone who would rather enjoy better food and fewer demands. That does not make every complaint fair, or prove that learning to fly would be beyond him. Krillin's suggestion actually gives him an idea for collecting his own pizza. The point is that the unheroic preference does not cancel the contribution already made. Yajirobe can sound petty about comforts while having something the fighters need. An assessment that notices only his reluctance would miss the supply they are leaving with.
“Hey, that's not fair! What kind of a chance does that give us!? If no one survives it, then it's just poison and there's nothing special about dying from poison, is there!?”
Thirteen people drank the water. None survived. Yajirobe establishes those figures with two questions: how many people drank it, and how many survived? The Darkness supplies the answers. His objection therefore has evidence behind it. He is not merely complaining that a difficult test sounds frightening; the account he has just received gives him no successful participant to balance against the deaths. Goku's willingness to proceed offers the strongest answer the scene gives him: the possibility of gaining strength may justify a risk that ordinary caution would reject. Yet determination does not refute Yajirobe's question about the apparent chance of success. His later pleading can be irritating without being foolish. The scene lets the adventurous choice coexist with a serious objection from the person refusing it. Calling the substance special does not, by itself, explain why another death would be different. Yajirobe makes the heroic framing answer for that gap rather than accepting it as a reason to drink.

Goku has not come to recruit Yajirobe. He says so after being told, without asking, that no tournament help will be forthcoming. Yajirobe then refuses to believe the answer. The boast exposes the attractive half of an obligation he wants to escape: being urgently needed. He can decline the dangerous work while imagining that the visitor has secretly recognized his decisive importance. Goku's denial should remove the problem, but it also removes the flattering reason for having it. That makes this an unimpressive display of confidence. The claim does not answer an assessment of his ability; it protects him from the possibility that the conversation was never about his ability at all. He invents a demand in order to enjoy rejecting it, then treats the absence of that demand as something his visitor must be hiding.
