He says it without arms, holding the blade in his teeth, having just walked through everything Gato's men could put between himself and the man who killed his partner. The creed from days earlier survives until it meets its invoice: a lifetime of treating devotion as service comes due in one sentence of apology, delivered to someone who can no longer accept it. Snow begins falling immediately after, and the scene lets the obvious reading stand without confirmation. What makes it land is that the apology is not really to Haku. It is the first honest sentence he has spoken about either of them.

The usual reading stops at edge: demon of the Hidden Mist declares himself above bonds. Worth noticing that he frames it as a warning rather than a boast, which makes it less a confession of strength than a disclosure of terms, the way a landlord discloses damp. He is telling a boy he has purchased exactly what he bought him for. The sentence exists so the story can spend the next few episodes refuting it item by item, ending at a grave with its speaker crying through a promise about weather. Villains get to be wrong slowly, and this one takes his time.
