Attack on Titan's Ending, Explained

The manga ended in April 2021 with chapter 139, the anime caught up in November 2023 with the second FINAL CHAPTERS special, and the argument has not stopped since. What follows is what happens and why it reads the way it does, not a defence or a prosecution.

What Eren actually does

The Rumbling is not interrupted in time. Eren's colossal titans kill roughly eighty percent of humanity before his friends stop him, and the story is unusually insistent about that number: this is not an averted apocalypse but a mostly completed one, halted at the last fraction. His stated goal, protecting Paradis by flattening the world that hates it, is achieved in the ugliest available sense. The survivors of the world can no longer threaten the island because there barely is a world.

Mikasa's choice

The ending's mechanical resolution is Mikasa entering the Founding Titan's mouth and beheading Eren, then kissing him goodbye. The story frames the act as the answer to a two-thousand-year problem: Ymir, the first titan, whose devotion to the king who used her kept the power of the titans running beyond death, watches Mikasa kill the person she loves most, sees the choice she herself could never make, and lets the titans end. Every titan power vanishes; the transformed are restored.

That framing is also the ending's most contested link: the fate of every titan turning on one woman's attachment being mirrored by another's. The chapter asserts the connection more than it explains it, and readers have been arguing about the mechanism since the day it printed.

The confession

In the paths, before dying, Eren tells Armin the truth this site's Eren page covers in detail: no grand design, just a boy who wanted the empty world from a book and was disappointed to find people in it, who kept moving toward catastrophe because stopping would have meant the disappointment was never worth anything. He also admits he wanted to live. The series spent four seasons letting viewers assemble nobler explanations, then removed them all in one scene.

The epilogue, and the extra pages

Mikasa buries Eren's head under the tree on the hill outside Shiganshina. Paradis militarises under the survivors' peace; the bird that has shadowed the series tugs her scarf into place, and the manga's final page was originally there.

Isayama then added several pages for the collected volume, and they change the aftertaste deliberately: years pass, Paradis grows into a modern city, the city is eventually destroyed in a war fought with weapons far beyond titans, and long after, a boy and his dog find a titan-sized tree growing over Eren's grave, drawn to echo the tree where Ymir's story began. The cycle the whole series fought is left visibly reloading. Readers who call the ending bleak and readers who call it honest are usually pointing at the same four pages.

Why the argument will not settle

Because the ending declines to grade its own protagonist. Eren is not redeemed, not excused, and not exactly condemned; the survivors get peace with an expiry date; the love story resolves in a beheading that the text treats as the kindest available act. Every faction of the fandom can find its reading supported and none can find the others ruled out. A tidier ending would have been easier to love and much easier to forget, and five years of argument suggest Isayama chose which of those he could live with.
