Narration is a promise about who survives to tell the story, and this series opens with Armin making it. The words play over the wall falling, but the tense is the real information: received, lived, were disgraced. Someone is looking back from far enough away that the worst day in a century has become history, which quietly guarantees the frightened blond boy on screen a future the episode refuses to guarantee anyone else. Fandom absorbed the phrase so completely that grim reminder became the community's own name for the event, a rare case of a translation choice turning into infrastructure. The other load-bearing word is cages.
