That flatness is a choice by a writer who spent three seasons letting this character scream. Eren at his most destructive is calm, procedural, nearly polite, and the calm communicates that the decision predates the speech by years and no argument delivered now will reach it. What the declaration commits him to becomes the series' final subject. There is no version of half a rumbling; the plan is indivisible, and the story insists on the arithmetic by putting the cost at eighty percent of humanity rather than letting the number stay abstract. The promise to protect the island lands strangest of all, because protection this total abolishes the thing protected. What grows on Paradis after this speech is not safety but a countdown, and the epilogue shows it expiring.

Here is the confession the entire series was built to delay, and it is not political. Eren does not cite Marley's crimes or the island's encirclement; he says that discovering other people existed spoiled a picture he had loved, the empty world from Armin's book, snowfields and salt seas with nobody in them. The apology stapled to the sentence is what unmakes him as villain and hero at once. Grand atrocity is supposed to arrive with grand motive, and the show hands its apocalypse to a boy whose deepest reason is that reality failed to match an illustration. Every ideology he wore afterwards, vengeance, protection, freedom, was tailoring over that first disappointment. Few stories have let a protagonist say anything so unflattering, and the series pays the full price: once the line is spoken, none of the destruction can be read as necessary again, including by him.
