The Best Angel Beats! Quotes, Every Line Checked

Nine verified Angel Beats! lines from Yuri, Otonashi, Kanade, Naoi, Hinata and Yui, none from the last three episodes, each tied to its episode.

Angel Beats! is thirteen episodes about a group of dead students fighting a war against a girl they call Angel, and it plays most of that war for laughs before it explains what the war was for. Nine verified lines follow, each in the Sentai English dub as Wikiquote transcribes it and each linked to the fuller commentary on the speaker's page. None comes from episodes 11 to 13: the lines from the finale sit on the character pages with spoiler flags, and the ending has its own guide. Two of the famous ones are here with a dissent attached, because they are quoted for reasons the episodes do not support.

“No one did. She accepted her fate. That's all there is to it.” — Yuri Nakamura

Iwasawa has vanished after playing her ballad, leaving her guitar behind, and the room wants Angel to have taken her. Yuri answers in three flat sentences. It is the first sign that the Battlefront's leader already knows peace in this place is a way out, and is running a war anyway.

“Well, I learned one thing: obeying Angel and enjoying school life wasn't the only way to get obliterated.” — Yuzuru Otonashi

Thought, not said, after the same meeting. Iwasawa obeyed nobody; she broke free of the teachers shutting the concert down, played her ballad and was gone once it ended.

“No! No! It's too stupid for her not to know her own name! Actually, I'm surprised none of you know it!” — Yuzuru Otonashi

The Battlefront is forging a test paper in Angel's name and discovers that nobody knows it. Otonashi goes and asks. She answers, Kanade Tachibana, and the war starts to look like what it was: a group of teenagers shooting at a girl none of them had ever asked a question.

“It's so we'll reflect on the error of our ways.” — Kanade Tachibana

Locked in a cell for eating mapo tofu during break beside a furious Otonashi, Kanade lies down and goes to sleep. She treats the rule as applying to her because it applies to everyone, and being replaced as president by Naoi, her own vice president, changes nothing about how she behaves. The calmest person in the room is the one the Battlefront had been treating as its enemy.

“I'm sorry, but were you referring to me? I am God.” — Ayato Naoi

The catchphrase has traveled much further than the character, mostly because it fits on a shirt. In the episode it comes just after a breakdown: a boy who one episode earlier was hypnotizing classmates into human shields and ended up crying in Otonashi's arms, now attached to Otonashi and hypnotizing Hinata into groveling before a clothespin. It works once. Repeated across the season it is a tic.

“Kanade only uses her powers to defend herself! That goes for her sword, too! It's for deflecting bullets!” — Yuzuru Otonashi

Guard Skill: Hand Sonic is the ability the Battlefront has feared, and Otonashi is the first to say what they have all watched it do, which is block. By this episode they are fighting a clone that does attack, and the contrast makes his case for him. The sentence marks the moment his loyalty crosses the table.

“Hey! What gives?! It's like we're at the climax of a boy's comic book!” — Hideki Hinata

TK has just thrown himself at a Kanade clone so the others can run, and Hinata names the genre. The episode wants credit for noticing that a chain of one-per-clone sacrifices is a shonen cliché while running the chain in full, and the wink makes the scene more self-aware without making it fresher. It is quoted as clever. It is a joke about the laziness of the scene it sits in.

“But I've always admired people who could do a German Suplex! It's a cool move! I wanna hold you down until I win!” — Yui

Yui has just told Otonashi, flatly, that a car left her paralyzed when she was little and that she spent her life in bed watching television; then comes the list: a home run, a soccer goal, pro wrestling. Every item is something done with a body, chosen by a girl who in life could not move hers, and the wrestling move she insists on is one Otonashi calls too tough to start with. Her first attempt throws him onto the pathway, and he tells her she almost had it.

“Now, then. I left the meeting and the word "cute" made me remember the hydroponics turnip I'm tending for the discontinued garden club. So, let me ask you how you think I should go about reporting this to the student council?” — Kanade Tachibana

The punchline of the OVA. Yuri has run a whole operation of faked high spirits in the hope that Angel will lead the Battlefront to God, and what she finds at the end of the trail is a girl tending a vegetable for a club that no longer exists and asking for the correct procedure to report it. Someone gardening for a defunct club is making a home of the place everyone else treats as purgatory.
