Otonashi thinks this to himself after the meeting about Iwasawa, just after Yuri has told the room that Iwasawa accepted her fate. Yuri's model says the school is a trap and Angel is the warden. Iwasawa did not obey anyone: she broke free of the teachers shutting down the concert, played her ballad, and was gone once it ended. The newcomer with no memories draws that lesson in one sentence. That is the structural job of an amnesiac protagonist, and Angel Beats uses it well: the audience learns the rules through the one character with no reason to lie to himself about them. By episode nine he will be the one helping people leave.

Five episodes in, the Battlefront is forging a test paper in Angel's name and discovers that none of them know what her name is. Hinata suggests writing Student body president. Otonashi's outburst is the moment the show admits what the war has been: a group of teenagers shooting at a girl they never once asked a question. He goes and asks. She answers, Kanade Tachibana, and he thanks her for calming him down; by the end of the episode she has been replaced as president, and the next finds her locked in detention beside him. Guard Skill: Hand Sonic is the ability the Battlefront has feared, and Otonashi is the first to say out loud what everyone has watched her do with it: block. She stops bullets, she stops blades, and when the SSS ran a whole operation to make her flunk her exams she did not retaliate. By episode eight the group is fighting a clone that does attack, and the contrast makes the point for him. He is shouting it at people who still call her Angel, and the sentence marks the exact moment his loyalty has moved across the table. What the series is doing here is quietly redefining who the antagonist ever was. There was no villain in the school, only a quiet girl trying to make the loud ones happy enough to leave.

He has just been dropped on his head on hard ground by a girl practicing a German suplex, and he has already been told, in this same conversation, that she could not do any of this in life. Minutes earlier she told him how completely: a car left her paralyzed when she was little, bedridden, watching everything on television. Otonashi is going along with a list he privately calls television fantasies, and the comedy of the line sits on top of what he already knows. The suplex was never a whim; it was one of the things a girl who could not move watched other people do. Otonashi's role after episode nine is to help people leave, and this scene shows what that job actually looks like from inside, which is mostly being patient with requests that do not make sense until the person has gone. Hinata finishes what Otonashi started, later in the same episode, with a proposal.
