The student council president the Battlefront calls Angel and shoots at until Otonashi asks her name. She tends a turnip for a club that no longer exists.
“Now, then. I left the meeting and the word "cute" made me remember the hydroponics turnip I'm tending for the discontinued garden club. So, let me ask you how you think I should go about reporting this to the student council?”
Yuri has just run Operation High Tension Syndrome, a day of faked high spirits meant to confuse Angel into leading the Battlefront to God. What she finds instead is a girl who runs a hydroponic garden for a club that no longer exists and wants to know the correct procedure for reporting a turnip. The OVA is a comedy episode, and this is its punchline, but it also restates the show's central argument in miniature: Kanade was never the thing the Battlefront needed her to be. She is procedural, literal and slightly lonely, and the garden is the tell. Someone tending a vegetable for a defunct club is someone making a home of the place everyone else calls purgatory. Yuri's reaction is to ban the Battlefront from eating for a week, which is about right.

Nobody expects the diagnosis to come from her. Otonashi is the one who has been helping people move on since episode nine; Naoi has the hypnosis; Hinata knows Yuri best. Kanade, who says less across the whole series than Yuri says in one briefing, states the finding like a lab result and Yuri hides under the sheets. What makes the line land is the word theory. She is not comforting anyone or claiming to know. She has observed a girl who used to shoot at her and has concluded, on the evidence, that the war is over, and she reports it in the register of a student council minute. The show has spent thirteen episodes teaching us to read her flatness as coldness. Here it reads as tact: the least emotional person in the room is the one who can say the thing without making Yuri feel watched.

“Like we're friends? Yes, you're right.”
Yuri has just noticed that the girl she fought called her by her first name, and this is the reply, with a smile the stage direction on Wikiquote is careful to record. Set it beside the ending of Madoka Magica, where Homura and Madoka's friendship is confirmed only as one of them stops existing. Angel Beats does the same thing on a smaller scale and with less ceremony: the two leaders of the war acknowledge each other as friends in an infirmary, and within the episode both will be gone. The comparison shows what Jun Maeda is after. Madoka's farewell rewrites a universe; this one rewrites a relationship, and the show treats that as the larger achievement. Every conflict in the series was two frightened people who had never spoken. The words that end it are a girl agreeing to a description.

Locked in a cell for eating mapo tofu during break, next to a boy who is furious about it, Kanade lies down and goes to sleep. Otonashi is treating the confinement as an injustice; she treats it as a rule that applies to her because it applies to everyone. That is the entire character in one exchange. She was student council president because she took the school seriously as a place, not as a prison, and being removed from office and replaced by Naoi changes nothing about how she behaves inside it. The joke is that the calmest person in the room is the one the Battlefront treated as its enemy.
