The Best Black Clover Quotes, Checked Against the VIZ Manga
Twelve verified Black Clover lines from VIZ's English manga, volumes 1 to 3: Asta, Yuno, Yami, Magna, Noelle and Mars, each with its page.
Black Clover starts with an orphan born without magic and the prodigy raised beside him, in a kingdom that measures people by their magic, and its first three volumes spend much of their dialogue arguing about what that measure is worth. Twelve verified lines follow, all from VIZ's English edition of the manga and all from those three volumes, checked against VIZ's official free chapter reader and its free previews of volumes 1, 2 and 3. Page numbers follow each row's source note: printed folios for volumes 1 and 3, positions in the free preview for volume 2. The chapter 2 and 3 pages were seen only in the chapter reader and are placed in volume 1 by matching the reader's chapter lengths to the book's contents page. Nothing here comes from later than chapter 17, so the page carries no spoilers past the third volume.
“Asta, not being chosen? There's no way that could happen!” — Yuno
Chapter 1, p. 50, as Asta's grimoire appears while Yuno is bound in Revchi's chains. Yuno used the same phrase once already, on p. 33, and Asta heard it as dismissal. Here it returns with its object supplied, and the earlier remark turns out to have been confidence. The construction flatters Yuno: Asta does the rescuing, and Yuno gets the last word on what it means.
“My magic... ...is never giving up!” — Asta
Shouted across the two-page attack on pp. 54–55. Read uncharitably, the chapter attaches the slogan to luck, since a caption on p. 53 credits the grimoire to his lack of magical power rather than his effort. The order of events answers most of that: the book appears only after he gets up again on p. 48. Even so, what lands the blow is a sword and a body trained to lift it, and the art is more honest about that than the words are.
“I'm here... ...to work my butt off and become the Wizard King.” — Asta
Chapter 2, after his entrance-exam bout with Sekke, who boasted he would have a blast in the Magic Knights without putting forth much effort. Asta first repeats that sentence in the negative and only then gives his own version, so the line is a correction, aimed as much at the captains in the stands as at the opponent on the floor. Winning proves Sekke's contempt was lazy. The claim about work is still unpaid.
“I'll take the best path... ...to become the Wizard King!” — Yuno
Chapter 3, p. 93, thought rather than said, just before he asks to join the Golden Dawn. Every captain has raised a hand for him, and he chooses by calculation, picking the squad the examinees call the strongest. He measures the best path by the goal alone; nothing in the choice concerns whose company he will keep on the way.
“In the end... ...the most important thing about a Magic Knight... ...is his or her magical powers.” — Yami Sukehiro
Chapter 3, p. 95. No captain has raised a hand for Asta, and Yami walks down into the arena to say why. The sentence describes how the room judged Asta, and Yami never pretends otherwise. His own standard turns out to be how a person answers being told the harsh reality, and Asta answers that he will become the Wizard King no matter how many times he falls.
“And one day... ...prove everyone wrong and become the Wizard King.” — Yami Sukehiro
Four pages later, p. 99, finishing a threat: one balloon earlier Yami promises Asta such a horrible time in the Black Bulls that he will be ripped to pieces. He has just told the arena that magical power is the most important thing about a Magic Knight, and now stakes his own squad on the examinee who has none. The jeers lettered beside Asta's face on the same page name the people he is supposed to prove wrong.
“But now you've hit your limit. Don't you think... you've done enough, Asta...?” — Magna Swing
Volume 2, chapter 8, p. 14, thought rather than said, while Asta is bloodied in the fight with the ice mage Heath. Magna has just remembered his own village cheering him for getting into the Magic Knights at all, and he silently offers Asta the same consolation. It is the most reasonable voice on the page, and it answers a question about Asta's record when the fight is about the villagers.
“I'm gonna become the Wizard King... ...in order to protect everybody!!” — Asta
The next page, to Heath. In chapter 1 the vow had a narrower address: make the church's sister happy, marry her, renovate the church. Here it comes with a reason that has other people in it, because if he gives up, nobody will protect the villagers. He still wants the crown, and the wider purpose arrives in the middle of a fight he is losing.
“What am I doing giving up?! You're a real man, Asta!!” — Magna Swing
Page 16, out loud. The turnaround is sincere, and it converts Asta's reason into a compliment about manhood, keeping the stance and dropping the argument. Magna's actions say more: on the next page he steps in front of Asta, then spends all the magic he has left on one attack.
“I'll just... ...have to protect you!” — Noelle Silva
Volume 3, chapter 17, p. 9. Mimosa, held in a cocoon of vines, admits she is slow, just as Noelle said; Noelle agrees, and only then makes the promise, with the word just making it sound like a chore. The kindness is real, and it has to be issued as condescension first.
“The weak are the first to go. That's all it is.” — Mars
The next spread, pp. 10–11. As a creed it is stock villain doctrine. The scene earns it through who is listening: Klaus, the proud Golden Dawn senior who has just berated himself for letting the Black Bulls save him, will put Asta's fighting down to luck within the chapter. Mars says out loud a ranking that at least one of the knights he is attacking already lives by.
“Just watch. You'll see... ...whether it was luck!!” — Noelle Silva
Page 17, answering Klaus's claim that fortune simply blessed Asta with his power; the page identifies Noelle by the art rather than by name. Klaus has a case on these pages, and her answer is an appeal to evidence not yet in. Two pages later, when Asta says he was born with zero magic, Klaus files it under luck again, so for now her line persuades only the reader.
