Yuno receives a four-leaf grimoire and, at the Magic Knights entrance exam, an offer from every captain. He chooses the Golden Dawn because he thinks the strongest squad gives him the best route to becoming Wizard King. That looks like an ambition organized entirely around advantage. The opening chapters complicate it through Asta, who grew up beside him in the same church and can read his reserve as rejection. When Revchi attacks, Yuno names Asta as his rival at the moment Asta is close to surrender. The childhood memory behind that declaration reverses their present positions: Yuno was the frightened child, and Asta was the one who fought to recover his stolen necklace. Later Yuno turns down a noble's comparison because the person he wants to compete with is Asta. His confidence does not make the friendship easy to read. He can choose the strongest institution without choosing the most prestigious rival.
“I'll take the best path... ...to become the Wizard King!”
Every captain raises a hand for Yuno, which gives him as wide a choice as the exam allows, and he makes it by calculation. The examinees have already described the Golden Dawn in the terms that matter to him: the strongest squad, led by the top candidate to be the next Wizard King, and, one of them sneers, a place only elite aristocrats can join. An orphan from a remote village picks the squad associated with nobility because he judges it the best route to the title. The line commits him to more than it says. Asta, called straight after him, draws no offer at all until Yami comes down and tells him he has no right to refuse the Black Bulls, a squad the examinees call full of scoundrels. The rivals leave the exam in opposite positions: one chose his ladder, the other was taken in. Yuno measures the best path by the goal alone. Nothing in the choice concerns whose company he will keep on the way.

Yuno has already said "There's no way!" once in this chapter, walking past Asta after the ceremony on p. 33. Asta hears dismissal. Hanging upside down from a tree afterward, he wonders whether he disappointed Yuno and concludes that Yuno probably does not even remember their childhood promise. The chapter lets that misreading stand until the fight with Revchi. Here the same phrase returns with its object supplied, and the earlier remark turns out to have been confidence rather than contempt. It is a neat piece of construction, and it quietly flatters Yuno. He is bound in Revchi's chains while Asta does the rescuing, yet the scene gives him the last word on what the rescue means: he knew all along. The reveal also asks a lot of one terse remark. Nothing on p. 33 signals that Yuno meant anything other than what Asta heard, and a rival who talks this sparingly leaves his friend to believe he has been written off.
