The Best Gundam SEED Quotes, Every Line Sourced
Nine verified Gundam SEED lines, from Kira's narrow bargain to Athrun's overrated advice in Destiny, each tied to its episode and linked to the fuller commentary on the speaker's page.
Gundam SEED opens its own timeline and retells the shape of the 1979 original for an audience that never saw it: a civilian boy in a prototype, a warship fleeing across the front, a masked commander on the other side. Its best lines are arguments about why anyone fights, and the series keeps handing the same argument to people on opposite sides. Nine verified lines follow, eight from SEED's fifty episodes and one from the sequel, SEED Destiny, each checked against Wikiquote's transcription of the English dub. The remastered series received a second English dub, announced in 2017, so a line here may also exist in a different English wording. None of the nine gives away how either series ends, and each links to the fuller commentary on the speaker's page.
“It's not that I want to fight... but I do want to protect this ship. Because of the people on board.” — Kira Yamato
Four episodes in, Mu has just told him the two of them are the only pilots the Archangel has, and Kira agrees to something much narrower than soldiering: this hull and the classmates sheltering in it. The first half of the series is the slow proof that the ship's cause and the war's cause will not stay separate.
“It's the same for us all. You won't find too many people who wish to fight for no reason at all. We fight because unless we fight, we cannot protect.” — Mu La Flaga
The same episode, from the adult who needs him in the cockpit: a decent man's recruitment pitch. Three episodes later Patrick Zala, on the other side, says almost the same thing about fighting as the only way to protect, and the rhyme is deliberate. The reasoning that puts a good person in a war reads, sentence by sentence, like the reasoning that runs one.
“You are a Coordinator. You're one of us, Kira.” — Athrun Zala
Athrun has the Strike locked in the Aegis's grip and is hauling Kira toward a ZAFT ship, and his appeal is to genetics rather than to their childhood. To him, Kira aboard an Earth Forces ship is a category error the friendship can correct; Kira's loyalty runs to the people actually beside him, and the whole conflict is already sitting in that gap.
“But your kindness doesn't come from being a Coordinator... it's because of who you are, Kira Yamato.” — Lacus Clyne
A pop singer and a politician's daughter, picked up from a drifting lifepod by the enemy, becomes the first person on either side to treat what Kira is and who he is as separate questions. She does it as a prisoner, offhandedly which is why it lands harder than the rally-volume speeches she is given later.
“I don't want any of you Coordinators acting friendly with me!” — Flay Allster
Same episode, same ship, and the opposite answer. Flay's prejudice is written as inherited and shallow rather than villainous, and the care in building her early is what lets the grief to come turn it into something much worse without the change feeling like a trick.
“When the coffee is first-rate, so is everything else. All right, let's go fight a war.” — Andrew Waltfeld
The Desert Tiger arrives with a cup of coffee, a professional who has arranged his life so that the war is a place he goes to, like an office. He is the first enemy Kira meets who plainly likes his work and dislikes the war.
“There is no meaning in fighting a war unless one can end it in victory.” — Patrick Zala
Said in the PLANT Supreme Council, in a debate over whether to launch a new offensive, answering Siegel Clyne's warning that spreading the war only breeds more hatred. It is not madness yet. It is the ordinary logic of a man whose wife died at Junius Seven, and the series lets it sound reasonable for a long time before he finishes the thought.
“My mother was at Junius Seven, which was only a PLANT for agriculture. Countless people, including children, died instantly from the nuclear attack. Did you expect me to sit back and do nothing?” — Athrun Zala
Marooned on an island with Cagalli, who attacked him and ended up his prisoner, Athrun answers her argument about the war with Junius Seven. He gave Kira the bare fact in episode five while trying to haul him off to a ZAFT ship; here it is a full case, and the grief explains why he is a soldier while settling nothing about whether he should stay one.
“Know what you're fighting for. Fighting for its own sake is pointless. Understand why you are so angry.” — Athrun Zala
The one line here from the sequel, SEED Destiny, and the most overrated in the set. It is aimed at Shinn and it is right about Shinn, but it is also a fair summary of Athrun's own first-series record, obeying ZAFT orders he privately doubted, handed over as advice. Rau Le Creuset asks the sharper version of the question in SEED's forty-first episode, and means something far less kind by it.
Every line here sits with its commentary on the Gundam SEED quote page, along with the later-story lines this list leaves out. Where SEED, Destiny, the Stargazer episodes and the Freedom film fall is covered in the watch order, and the After Colony pilots argue the same questions in the best Gundam Wing quotes. How each quote on this site is checked is at our verification notes.
