“Kira, you are going to fight, and fight, and fight... until you die. It's the only way I will ever forgive you.”
Spoken alone, in the corridor, after she has spent the episode in Kira's bed telling him she will protect him. The gap between what she says to his face and what she says here is the series' most uncomfortable trick, and it relies on the audience already knowing what Kira does not: that her father's ship went down because Kira held back against Athrun, and that she blames him for it. Flay's plan is to make him a weapon by loving him, which is a more disturbing idea than most mecha shows are willing to give a sixteen-year-old. It also does not work, or works only for a while, and the show is honest that her cruelty costs her more than it costs him. By episode forty-seven she is terrified and trying to reach him to apologize. The line is where she stopped being a bystander to the war and became one of its authors.

Flay's father is an Atlantic Federation vice minister and a Blue Cosmos sympathizer, and this is how she talks to Lacus Clyne, a prisoner offering her a hand, in the mess of the ship that rescued them both. The show makes Flay unpleasant early and on purpose. Her prejudice is written as inherited and shallow rather than as villainy, which is what makes the next seven episodes work: when her father's ship is destroyed in front of her she has nowhere to put the grief except into exactly this, and Kira, the Coordinator who was acting friendly, becomes both the target and the instrument. SEED's most disliked character is also its most carefully built, and this line is the foundation. A more sympathetic Flay would have made her later cruelty a shock instead of a consequence.
