Athrun has flown back to the PLANTs with no orders and one question, and his father answers it by saying the war ends when the last Natural is dead, then has him arrested. Patrick Zala is the rare Gundam parent who is neither absent nor dead; he is present, in power, and wrong, which makes this exchange the show's real climax for Athrun even though the finale is eight episodes away. What is worth noticing is that Athrun's challenge is still the challenge of a loyal son. He does not accuse; he asks whether this is really what his father means, and gives him room to say no. The refusal to take that room is what frees Athrun, and the series is honest that being freed by a parent's cruelty is not the same as being at peace with it.

Nicol has just defended Athrun against Yzak and Dearka, asking what their accusations will change. Once they leave, he offers a gentler opening: this behavior does not seem like Athrun, and perhaps he could explain. Athrun refuses that opening too, then leaves the locker room, hits the wall and says Kira's name. The sequence distinguishes support from access. Nicol can stop the public humiliation without earning an account of the private conflict underneath it. Athrun's request therefore does more work than a general indication that he is upset. It blocks the one conversation in the scene that might proceed without an accusation. His silence preserves the gap between what his team saw and what the encounter meant to him. The name spoken outside supplies the explanation he could not give the person who stayed to listen.

Elsewhere in this episode, Kira and Athrun admit that each tried to kill the other. The exchange also recalls Nicol and Tolle, the friends caught in their fighting. Against that reckoning, Athrun's claim to have intervened on his own authority is more than a convenient exemption from ZAFT's orders. It leaves him responsible for the choice without allowing a new alliance to erase the earlier choices. Kira distinguishes killing a person he never knew from intending that person's death, but neither man uses the distinction to deny what happened. The intervention and the admissions belong together as a change in how Athrun accounts for his conduct. He is no longer describing only what a military role required. He is identifying an action as his own, in an episode that makes personal responsibility painful enough to mean something. Choosing differently does not give him a clean past.

Athrun threatens to kill Cagalli if she tries shooting him in this same episode. He identifies himself as a ZAFT soldier and refuses to let her interfere with the mobile suit she says will kill people. The alarm over the thrown gun cuts across that carefully declared division. They may claim incompatible rights to use force, but a loaded weapon moving carelessly between them creates a danger neither has chosen. Cagalli apologizes, and Athrun's reply is exasperation rather than a renewed military threat. The comedy makes them briefly answerable to the same practical rule. It does not establish that either has abandoned the war or become harmless. It reveals how much their elaborate language of enemies depends on an assumption that violence remains deliberate. An accident threatens to make nonsense of both positions before either can win the argument.

Shinn answers Athrun's demand for an explanation by saying that his entire family died at Onogoro. He connects their deaths to their trust in Orb and the Athhas. That reply exposes the problem with Athrun's intervention: he has already suggested that the grievance is trivial before finding out what it is. His question leaves room for an answer while his warning tells Shinn how little that answer is expected to matter. There is a defensible concern behind the interruption. Protecting the Representative from an irrelevant confrontation need not mean endorsing everything Orb has done, and bereavement does not make every accusation correct. But Athrun cannot establish irrelevance by anticipating it. Shinn's account gives him a specific loss and a stated connection to the people being challenged. Those claims still require judgment; they cannot fairly be dismissed as an excuse before they are heard. Athrun tries to regulate the confrontation before learning what brought it into the room.

Kira asks about the other Lacus appearing in the PLANTs, then about the Coordinators who tried to kill the real one. Those are much harder questions than whether Chairman Durandal looks busy or makes persuasive speeches. Athrun has offered the public performance of leadership as an answer to a question about its intentions. Kira introduces specific acts that the performance does not explain. The distinction matters because the exchange does not itself prove that Durandal ordered the attack. Kira's questions challenge Athrun's confidence without settling every accusation that could follow from them. Even on that narrower basis, Athrun's defense is weak. Effort can demonstrate commitment to a project while leaving the project itself in doubt. Praising how hard the chairman works skips the very issue under discussion: what that work is meant to accomplish. Athrun's certainty would be more persuasive if it could survive an explanation of the substitute Lacus, rather than arriving before one.

Meer refuses Athrun's invitation to leave because she would rather remain Lacus. She even accepts his description of her life as a role. That answer makes his warning harder to dismiss as a simple awakening: he is not merely giving information to someone who has failed to notice the arrangement. She sees something worth keeping in it. Her strongest objection is that a chosen performance can still be a life. Athrun cannot refute that simply by insisting on the difference between her name and Lacus's. He has to show why this particular arrangement denies her the security she wants. His warning, delivered before she defends the role, supplies that argument: the chairman will need her only temporarily, then have her killed. That is Athrun's warning here, not an outcome this exchange independently proves. It nevertheless identifies the danger his appeal must address. Telling Meer who she really is does less work than asking whether the person assigning the role will let her keep living once it stops being useful.

Rau asks what happens if Kira refuses to listen. Athrun's answer turns a proposed rescue into a threat against the person he intends to rescue. Just beforehand, he describes Kira as naive, good-natured, and exploited by the Naturals. He wants to return and reason with him because he is certain that a fellow Coordinator will come around. That certainty is the weak point. Athrun has allowed Kira only one response that can count as understanding: agreement with Athrun's side. Refusal will not demonstrate that Kira has considered something differently; it will trigger the promise to shoot him down. The military setting gives Athrun a real conflict between personal attachment and opposing forces, but his own explanation makes the contradiction sharper. If exploitation is what troubles him, killing the supposed victim hardly completes the rescue. Rau's question reveals how little space the offer of reason actually leaves for an answer Athrun does not want.
