Did Dio Really Say “You Thought It Was ___, but It Was Me, Dio”?

The forced-kiss scene in the first anime episode is real, but no source we can cite gives Dio's English words; the fill-in-the-blank template is a fan format Anime News Network recorded spreading by 2014.

Unverified in those words. The scene is real; the English words are not established. In the first episode of the 2012 JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime, Dio Brando forces a kiss on Erina, the girl Jonathan likes, and Anime News Network's reviews of that episode record the moment. What no source we can cite records is the line Dio says afterward. The only English text we found is a transcription on Wikiquote, added without a source, which gives it as "You thought your first kiss would be JoJo, but it was I, Dio!" The open version, "You thought it was ___, but it was me, Dio!", is a fan template, and Anime News Network recorded it spreading by 2014.

What the scene is, by the sources

Anime News Network reviewed the first episode in its Fall 2012 preview guide. Carl Kimlinger described Dio trying to supplant Jonathan as the family's heir and wrote that when Dio "steals the first kiss of Jonathan's sweetheart," Erina, "he goes too far, and soon the two are on the road to a burning, lifelong hatred." Carlo Santos placed it in the second half: the episode "brings it all to a head in the latter half when Dio forcibly kisses the girl that Jojo likes," and the two boys then fight. The official Japanese anime site lists the episode as 侵略者ディオ; Anime News Network's encyclopedia gives its English title as "Dio the Destroyer," and Wikiquote heads its section "Dio the Invader."

So the source of a joke format is a forced kiss used as a move in a rivalry. Neither review prints what Dio says, and the official site's synopsis stops before the kiss. The meme strips the scene away and keeps only the shape of a boast, a setup followed by a self-named reveal. Our reading is that the shape is what made it portable: it corrects someone else's expectation, and that works with any expectation at all.

Why the wording is unverified

Wikiquote's JoJo page carries the line in its section for episode 1, and its page history shows how it got there. An unregistered editor added it on January 2, 2017, as "You thought your first kiss would be from JoJo..., but it was me, Dio!!" In July 2018 another unregistered edit, from a different address, rewrote it with "Have you and JoJo kissed yet?" in front and "it was I, Dio" at the end, close to the form the page carries now. Neither edit cites a source; the phrase links only to a meme site, and the section does not say whether it transcribes subtitles, the English dub or something else. Two unsourced pronouns, "me" and "I", are not evidence for either, and this page does not quote the line as Dio's words.

How the format spread

Anime News Network's Mike Toole, in a column dated June 1, 2014, wrote about the series' "emerging reach and appeal online." He called the images he showed comic moments from the first anime series and singled one meme out: "The whole 'You thought that [insert joke here], but it was actually me, Dio!' in particular has taken off, spawning hundreds of joke images, plus stuff like fan-made comics and merchandise." He added that it "could turn into the next 'over 9000' gag," which is the subject of our Vegeta fact-check. That column is the earliest editorial record of the template that we read. It shows the joke was already a fill-in-the-blank format by mid-2014; it quotes the meme, not the show.

Anime News Network's encyclopedia dates the anime's premiere to October 5, 2012 and credits Takehito Koyasu as Dio's Japanese voice and Patrick Seitz as his English one. Those credits name the voices; they do not give the dub's wording.

What the official English manga prints

We could not check it. VIZ Media publishes Part 1 in English as three hardcovers, and the first, Phantom Blood Vol. 1, was released on February 24, 2015. Its contents page lists chapters 2 to 5 as "Dio Brando the Invader," parts 1 to 4, starting on page 35. VIZ's free preview of that book ends on page 33, with Dio newly arrived at the Joestar house, before the scene with Erina. VIZ's English names do not always match the anime subtitles (our page on why JoJo's Stands have new English names sets out several cases), so the manga's wording of this line should not be guessed at until someone reads the page.

The verdict

Unverified as worded. Dio does steal Erina's first kiss in episode 1, and the meme grew out of that scene. His exact English line rests on an anonymous, uncited transcription whose wording has already changed once. The open template, "You thought it was ___, but it was me, Dio!", is a fan generalization, documented as a meme format by 2014. Until someone reads the line in a named English release, whether VIZ's manga, the subtitles or Patrick Seitz's dub, quote the scene rather than the words.
