Magic Knight Rayearth on screen is one 49-episode TV series in two seasons, a three-episode OVA that retells the story in a different continuity, a film-length cut of that OVA, and a new TV adaptation that began in October 2026. Watch the TV series straight through, episodes 1 to 49. Treat the OVA as optional and separate. Treat the 2026 series as a fresh adaptation, not a sequel. Nothing has to be reordered.

The TV series: two seasons, 49 episodes

TMS Entertainment, which produced it, lists the series on its official works page as 49 half-hour episodes broadcast from October 17, 1994 to November 27, 1995. Anime News Network splits it the way North American releases did: the first season is episodes 1 to 20, from October 17, 1994 to March 13, 1995, and Magic Knight Rayearth 2 is episodes 21 to 49, from April 10 to November 27, 1995. ANN’s Blu-ray review notes that the second season aired four weeks after the first and that the Discotek release numbers all 49 episodes in one run.

Watch them in that order. ANN’s summary of the second season begins soon after the girls get back to Tokyo, with Hikaru wishing they could return to Cephiro, so it depends entirely on how the first season ends. The first season is, in that review’s words, “firmly based on the source manga”; the second “takes extensive liberties with the source material, including the introduction of new main villains.”

Two recaps are optional. ANN’s episode list marks episode 9 as part of a one-hour recap special, and the Blu-ray review lists a recap episode that aired between episodes 8 and 9 among the disc extras. TMS also lists a separate 30-minute special, Magic Knight Rayearth Zōkangō, broadcast on December 16, 1995, that looks back over the first and second chapters. Neither adds story.

The OVA is a different continuity

Rayearth (1997) is three 45-minute episodes, released on July 25, 1997 according to TMS, and ANN’s encyclopedia calls it an “alternate retelling” of the TV series. In TMS’s synopsis Hikaru, Umi and Fuu are friends at the same junior high, about to graduate, and Cephiro breaks through a barrier into Tokyo itself, with Eagle aiming to invade Earth. Nothing in it continues the TV story, and nothing in the TV story needs it. Watch it after the series, if at all, as a remix with the same characters.

It also exists as one piece: Rayearth Special Edition: Wings of Hope, a 120-minute director’s cut released on December 2, 1998, per TMS. Pick one version, not both. ANN’s 2025 report says Discotek’s complete collection of the TV anime did not include the OVA, so in North America it has to be found separately.

The 2026 series is a new start

A new Magic Knight Rayearth TV anime began airing in Japan on October 7, 2026. Its official broadcast page lists Wednesday nights on TV Asahi and says it is airing for two consecutive cours. Its director, Yui Miura, told ANN that the story is based on the original manga “while incorporating additional episodes,” so it retells the story from the start rather than following the 1990s anime. ANN’s Fall 2026 preview guide says it streams on Crunchyroll on Wednesdays, and Crunchyroll’s fall schedule listed an English dub among those coming at a later date. Those are reports from the start of the season, not a promise of where it streams later. No episode count had been announced on the pages checked on October 14, 2026.

It needs nothing before it. A viewer can start there, or with the 1994 series, and lose nothing either way. Starting with the 1994 series and then watching the new one means seeing the second arc told two different ways, because the old anime’s second season departs from the manga and the new one says it follows it.

The order, in one place

1. Magic Knight Rayearth, episodes 1 to 20 (1994–95). 2. Magic Knight Rayearth 2, episodes 21 to 49 (1995). 3. Optional and separate: the Rayearth OVA (1997) or its Wings of Hope cut (1998). Separately: Magic Knight Rayearth (2026), a new adaptation of the manga.

English versions

According to ANN’s 2025 report, Media Blasters first released the TV anime on VHS and DVD in the United States, and Discotek Media licensed it in 2014 and released it as a complete collection on DVD and Blu-ray in 2017. ANN’s review of that set credits the English dub to Bang Zoom! Entertainment. Those are release histories, not a statement of where the series streams today.
