The Best Magic Knight Rayearth Quotes, Verified

Seven checked lines from the 1994–95 Magic Knight Rayearth anime, from Clef doubting the summons to Hikaru's last line, each linked to fuller commentary.

Magic Knight Rayearth sends three eighth graders from Tokyo Tower into Cephiro, a world where, as one of its Rune Gods puts it, the heart that believes becomes power. Its best lines are rarely about magic. They are about three girls who have only just met working out what they owe each other, and about the adults of Cephiro who know more than they say. Seven checked lines follow, all from the 1994–95 TV anime, all as Wikiquote transcribes them. Wikiquote does not say which English translation its transcriptions come from, so these are English transcriptions rather than the text of a particular dub or subtitle release. Wikiquote gives episode titles but no numbers; the numbers here come from Anime News Network’s episode lists.

“Really. What was the princess thinking when she summoned such children?” — Clef

Episode 1, thought rather than said, just after Umi pulls the master mage’s cape and tells him he looks younger than the three of them. Played as a joke about a small mage being underestimated, it is also the first time anyone in Cephiro questions the summons.

“Yeah, but that girl would have been killed if I hadn't done that!” — Hikaru Shidou

Episode 4, from inside a net, after Hikaru kicks a monster and Umi blames her for the result. Fuu’s reply, that the monster was angry to begin with, settles the argument in Hikaru’s favor.

“Why did Fuu's weapon evolve after she did something so reckless!? Oh, this is so unfair! If it grows after you do something reckless, every Kamikaze car driver would become a Magic Knight!” — Umi Ryuuzaki

Episode 7. Earlier in the same episode Umi argued that time at home would slow down if she willed it, because Cephiro is the land of the will. Her rant is a complaint about the rules, not about Fuu.

“Time is of little consequence to the heart. Even if our time together has been brief... and even if I know only a little bit about them... it only means I have more to look forward to in our friendship.” — Fuu Hououji

Episode 13, to Caldina, who has asked whether Fuu would risk her life for two girls she just met. Included as the line this site rates lowest: the quotable opening dodges the question, and the speech’s plain last sentence, “I want to fight with them,” does the real work.

“Rescue the princess and save the world from destruction. This is actually a rather familiar story, don't you think?” — Fuu Hououji

Episode 14, over a map Mokona has just produced. Umi answers that this is reality, and Hikaru admits she has never played a video game. The familiar story turns out to be less familiar than Fuu thinks.

“I'd like to believe that the princesses of Chizeta are telling me the truth. It might seem a little bit crazy to fight them by myself. But I really believe that Tarta and Tatra will honestly fight me fair and square.” — Umi Ryuuzaki

Episode 44, the second season’s 24th, to the Rune God Selece, nine episodes after Umi was complaining that the same princesses had taken her armor and clothes. Selece answers with the series’ rule: in Cephiro, the heart that believes becomes power.

“One day, I will want to return to Cephiro again. Not out of regret, but because I'll want to see what the new Cephiro is like.” — Hikaru Shidou

Episode 49, the last line Wikiquote records from the series. The second season began with Hikaru wishing she could go back and do some good for the land Emeraude had protected. This time she wants to go back for its own sake.
